Victor Shklovsky, 'Hamburg rating', 1928
- Yury, we are quite familiar with regular Antivirus software tests performed by the "Virus Bulletin" magazine and know that Doctor Web regularly shows excellent results in these tests. What's special about Hamburg tests?
- Comparative testing of antiviral software as performed by the "Virus Bulletin" staff can be compared, given certain imagination, with the "Formula-1" race. This "competition" participants are the most fresh and well-tuned Antivirus software versions "loaded" with latest virus databases. That's why we are so proud about Doctor Web victories in prestigious "Virus Bulletin" tests and we have every right to state that as per results of those tests our program had been many times declared the best one.
If we decide to stick to auto racing terminology, than the tests performed at the Virus Test Center of the Hamburg University can be called Paris-Dakar Race of Antiviruses. The competition is performed on "rough terrain" and can serve as an indication of the way the software would perform in the hands of a not very experienced and tough user. The recent "Heureka-2" test was performed on old, "frozen" almost a year ago antivirus scanners versions. For example, Doctor Web was "racing" on its 4.25 version with virus database dated back to 20 June 2001. All this time the programs were left without any developers' "technical support", neither program engines nor even virus databases were ever updated. As to the test collection - quite on the contrary: it included mostly new viruses developed after antivirus programs and their databases were "frozen". VTC specialists certainly did not lack sense of humor: the test name ("Heurekа") means that in such conditions any Antivirus program has every right to shout "Heurekа!" upon detecting each unfamiliar virus.
So what in fact had been tested in "Heureka-2"? We have already mentioned the key feature of this particular test: the virus collection used contained virus samples not explicitly present in the antivirus scanners' databases. Therefore appropriate viruses could have been detected as modifications of already known viruses or as representatives of one of the big virus families (for instance, Doctor Web detects with the single database signature the whole big family of viruses developed with the help of a certain virus developer kit), or with the help of heuristic algorithms (Doctor Web heuristics is justly treated as one of the best in the world). The test collection included viruses of two types: macro viruses and script viruses. The detection percentage had been calculated for two three-month periods. The comparison results were calculated for each of these three-month periods separately and both res ults combined. The test methods were rather complicated and even "exotic", that's why the organizers did not presented results in a ranged table but just indicated "slightly better" performing antivirus products for each category. We must say there were not many such products and Doctor Web appeared among those "slightly better" in practically every "nomination"! Furthermore, in the final testing Resume the VTC specialists pointed out Doctor Web Antivirus as the best product regarding the antivirus software ability to detect maximal number of viruses in the whole test collection. You are welcome to find out more details about the test on the VTC WWW-site (http://agn-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/vtc/).
It's only natural that we are very proud about this excellent result, but, of course, we would never advise our customers to try VTC-style experiments. On the contrary: we use this opportunity to remind again about the importance of updating Doctor Web program and virus databases on a regular basis.
