On April 24, 2001 Doctor Web, a popular Russian antivirus program, has
celebrated its 9th anniversary. The development started with Spider
program. Tireless Spider cured viruses caught in the web "set" by this
antivirus guard for DOS. Since then stylised spider became a logo of the
programs created under Igor Daniloff's direction.Soon Web, a doctor program (scanner), was added to Spider guard. Together they formed Spider's Web antivirus system.
Two years later, after a serious alteration, Web doctor program got its present name Doctor Web. The word Doctor reveals the very essence of the program created to cure all kinds of computer viruses, and the previous name left the word Web. However, with the development of the World Wide Web the name of the program - Doctor Web - obtained a new meaning, World Wide Web Doctor. This new name fully corresponds to the present substance of Doctor Web antivirus program.
Igor Daniloff created his first antivirus program, Spider after he had read Computer virusology, a thorough work by Nikolai Bezroukov (Kiev, 1991). "It should be done the other way", - Igor said to himself - and after a sleepless night the first Spider version appeared. The most important idea - that of emulation of the program running process - was absolutely new at that time (year 1992), and now it is essential for many well-known antivirus programs.
The program was sent by Igor Daniloff to a European competition 1&1 that was held for the countries of the Eastern Europe in 1993 in order to find interesting program products and technologies. And he won! The young gifted programmer was awarded a fully paid booth at the biggest international computer exhibition CeBIT-1993 in Hannover. At the exhibition Igor Daniloff met the leading specialists in the field of computer virusology and entered the coterie of selected persons.
Also that year at the conference held in Abrau-Durso (Russia) Igor Daniloff made the acquaintance of DialogueScience representatives. The fruit of the acquaintance was an agreement set in 1994, and since then DialogueScience and Doctor Web work together!
The major stages of Doctor Web development:
The results Doctor Web shows in various international tests are permanently high. On five separate occasions, Virus Bulletin, an authoritative international magazine, has awarded Doctor Web the prestigious "Virus Bulletin 100%" prizes. One can be awarded this prize only if both scanner and guard have detected all the viruses registered on users' computers and added to the test set.
In the near future Igor Daniloff's Antivirus Lab and DialogueScience plans to release a few new products: a centralised Doctor Web family products managing system within a local net, Doctor Web for Windows NT/2000 (server), Doctor Web for Sun Solaris, Doctor Web for Lotus Notes/Domino. Also there are plans to develop an antivirus for Windows CE and Palm.
Its 10th anniversary Doctor Web will meet with a new set of program decisions and technologies. But at the same time Doctor Web will remain reliable and easy in use, preserving the qualities it has already proved to have.
We wish Igor Daniloff and his developer team a happy 9th anniversary of Doctor Web!
