June 27 1999, a well-known persona in the Russian computer business, the
author of Aidstest, the most popular antivirus program in the nineties,
Dmitri Nikolaevich Losinsky accomplished 60 years. After graduating from the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of the Moscow State University, Lozinsky worked in two major Soviet organizations, Gosplan and Ministry of Economics, where he dealt with problems of information encrypting, economic modeling, data processing and programming automation.
Lozinsky's crowning achievement in his research and applied work was the creation of Aidstest, an antivirus program that protected computer systems and information resources in Russia and neighboring countries against viruses for 10 years.
When Vienna, a computer virus, first appeared in Gosplan Computer Center in 1988, it was Lozinsky who promptly provided a solution by creating a program that could detect and remove this infector. Aidstest, the first massively used domestic antivirus program, helped to curb the virus epidemic that broke out in Russia in 1989-1990. In the ensuing years, Lozinsky continued to develop and enhance the functionality of Aidstest, providing a reliable protection of Russia's information infrastructure against the attacks of new, more complex computer viruses.
Aidstest was used by millions of individual and thousands of corporate PC users all over the world. Totally, more than 5 million computers were protected by Aidstest. It was used by such key federal and local structures as the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Economics, Ministry of Finances, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technologies, FAPSI, Pension Fund, Government and City Hall of Moscow, Mosgas, GUVD, Mosenergo, etc. Among foreign users were organizations in the former Soviet republics, as well as IAEA (Austria), BASF Corp. (USA), etc.
Lozinsky's contribution to the virus prevention and removal is impossible to exaggerate. Due to years of his patient research of computer infectors and efforts to improve Aidstest and other domestic antivirus programs, Russia was able to avoid global epidemics over last decade. Thus saved computer data and time of millions of users yield a national economic effect estimated by experts as $100 million.
Lozinsky is taking an active part in development of other domestic antivirus software. For instance, Doctor Web uses an external antivirus database built around a new algorithm for presentation of virus detection and removal procedures, created by Igor Daniloff and Dmitry Lozinsky. This algorithm allows to automate the analysis of new viruses, which is particularly important for creation of protection tools against them. He also guided the creation of DSAVmail, an antivirus component that works along with the e-mail system and checks incoming messages for virus infection.
In 1996 Dmitry Lozinsky was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of DialogueScience. Since then he has been engaged in managerial activity on advanced developments of information protection tools. His numerous speeches on seminars, conferences, press, radio and television, both in Russia and abroad, have always aroused a significant public interest.
One of the major goals Lozinsky achieved in Russian computer market is that he was among the first who dramatically changed the mentality of domestic customers. He convinced many of them that there was sense to purchase legal software in spite of the availability of pirate copies. According to the local Dator and TopProfi ratings, from 1994 to 1999 Lozinsky was repeatedly listed among top ten well-known persons in the Russian computer business.
Lozinsky shares his extensive knowledge and experience with young developers. Due to his efforts, in Russia were created highly skilled development teams. Their antivirus products not only match, but sometimes exceed major Western products.
DialogueScience congratulates Dmitry Nikolaevich Lozinsky on his anniversary and wishes him good health, long life and success in his work!
