Beta-version Dr.Web for Windows - the first attempt that does count!

(Test results - Dr.Web v.4.01beta for Windows 95/98/NT)

In July 1998 Virus Bulletin, a respected international magazine on antivirus security (published in the UK), tested antivirus scanners for Windows NT workstations. The results published in the September issue showed the first beta-version of the new antivirus program by DialogueScience Dr.Web v.4.01beta for Windows 95/98/NT to be outstanding - by the average rate it scored No. 3 in the world.

In the article, devoted to the test, Dr.Web is compared to a mighty club - somewhat slow, a little old-fashioned looking but very effective none-the-less. Here are test results:

ItW Overall 99.9%    Macro 98.9%
ItW File 100.0%    Polymorphic 100.0%
ItW Boot 98.9%    Standard 99.7%

In the first category - where the "wild" virus set was offered (viruses that can actually be found in the real computer world) - Dr.Web showed 99.9% detection rate. A VB 100% award eluded Dr Web by one missed boot sector virus, Lilith, a non-detection which should be easily rectified, Virus Bulletin wrote.

Another category - detection of macro viruses. Dr.Web's result in this category was 98.9%. It took the fifth place, taking into consideration that none achieved 100% result (the best was 99.5%).

The next category - detection of polymorphic viruses. Here Dr.Web showed its usual 100% best detection rate. Only two other antivirus programs showed the absolute result together with Dr.Web.

And the last category - special standard set test. Here Dr.Web shared 2-3 place with 99.7% result.

By the average percentage including all the categories Dr.Web's result is number three in the test. Last summer it also took third average in the antivirus scanners for DOS test run by Virus Bulletin.

On the whole, we may say - the debut was a success! The traditionally strong Dr.Web kernel together with a user-oriented interface made the first beta of Dr.Web antivirus program for Windows 95/98/NT very competitive on international level. Besides, Virus Bulletin specially noted that although being a beta-version, the program showed no problems or errors during the test ("A great plus point, from a reviewer and user point of view, was that despite being declared a beta, Dr Web showed no signs of instability whatsoever.")

At our WWW server there is already the next beta-version Dr.Web for Windows 95/98/NT v.4.02beta available.
