The results of the February antivirus program test held by Virus Bulletin magazine Doctor Web scanner, developed in Russia, ranked No. 8 among the best antivirus programs in the world!

In the February issue of Virus Bulletin, a respected international magazine, the results of the latest comparative testing of the antivirus programs, working under MS-DOS, were been published.

In the test Doctor Web antivirus program took the honourable 8th place among the best antivirus scanners from all over the world! It is of a particular interest that the gap between the first and the 8th places is very small, it can be measured as 0.8% -- zero point eight percent!

Doctor Web program showed an absolute result in an important and prestigious ("technological") category, having detected 100.0% of complex polymorphic viruses! It is being mentioned that it is already for the THIRD TIME ONE AFTER ANOTHER that Doctor Web achieves 100% result in Virus Bulletin's tests (January, 1997; July-August, 1997 and January, 1998)! There is no other scanner that could boast such stability in this category.

The highest 100.0% rate was also achieved by Doctor Web in a very topical category - that of macro viruses detecting (by now the macro epidemic is continiously and widely spreading).

That is how the result table of the comparative test looks like:

The aim of the tests Virus Bulletin performs is to check on a numerous virus set antivirus programs' ability to detect viruses of the following categories:

Experts consider polymorphic viruses to be the most difficult one. There are both common ItW viruses and various cunning and tricky collection viruses. The aim is to test the "technological base" of an antivirus, the way it understands deeply the nature of the viruses of this class. That is to detect not only some separate mutant samples of the polymorphic viruses, but the most possible (100% means that the whole total of the polymorphic viruses from the set was detected!). The point is that the "muscles", but the "brains" of a program are checked.

The results of the present test received, the magazine once more (as many time already) particularly noted Dr Web's strength in fighting against polymorphic viruses:

"DialogueScience specialized in detecting 'difficult' viruses, and Dr Web turns in another stalwart job in the trickier sets here. With perfect polymorphic and macro detection, the other holes in detection need only a little improvement."

If we score the average percentage of the detected viruses of the six test categories we will get the following generalized result:
1. DrSolomon's AVTK 100.0%
2. Sophos Sweep 99.925%
3. Norman Virus Control 99.725%
4. Norman Thunderbyte 99.525%
5. Data Fellows 99.4%
6. Kami AVP 99.4%
7. ESET NOD-iCE 99.25%
8. DialogueScience DrWeb 99.225%
9. IBM AntiVirus 99.05%
10. Alwill AVAST! 98.4%
11. EliaShim ViruSafe 98.325%
12. McAfee VirusScan 97.975%
13. iRiS AntiVirus 96.125%
14. Symantec Norton AntiVirus 96.0%
15. Trend Micro PC-cillin 94.525%
16. Cybec VET 93.375%
17. Grisoft AVG 84.15%
18. Command F-PROT Pro 82.85%

Strictly speaking, there is no such an average rate in Virus Bulletin test protocols. Obviously, such a simplified generalized description neutralizes different "weights" of "quite simple" and "the most difficult" test categories. However, any other generalized result table - a "fairer" one - may only advance Doctor Web's position anyway since the program showed the highest detection rate exactly in the most "important" categories - that of polymorphic and macro viruses.

The magazine runs the comparative antivirus programs for DOS test for the 7th time.

Doctor Web's debut in January, 1996 was recognized as very impressive ("A fairly impressive VB comparative debut for this Russian product"). Surprisingly, a "beginner" with 95,2% result turned out to win the 2nd place in the most difficult test - polymorphic viruses detection!

In March of the same year the magazine dedicated a special detailed article to the study of Doctor Web program phenomenon ("The Web of Detection", Virus Bulletin, March 1996), in which Dr. Keith Jackson, the author of the article, noted program's particular strength in detecting polymorphic viruses ("When it comes to detecting polymorphic viruses, Dr Web is excellent!").

In the comparative of June, 1996 Doctor Web with its rather high 95.5% detection rate appeared to take "only" the 4th place in polymorphic viruses category. In January, 1997 100% result was shown together with Doctor Web program by 4 more products.

Half a year passed. And - here we are! - in July, 1997 test the most popular in Russia antivirus program Doctor Web once again achieves 100% detection rate for polymorphic viruses and very high 99.5% - for macro viruses. Besides, in the total average DrWeb wins the third place.

In the February test the results were improved. In polymorphic viruses - 100.0%, in macro viruses - also 100.0%! However, the average total placed DrWeb at the eighth and not at the third place. But there still is a reason to be proud of it. Actually, the gap between the average percentage for the first and the ninth places is only 0.95%. It means that the products show almost equal virus DETECTION quality.

But not all of them are able also to CURE viruses. Doctor Web can not only detect viruses, but also cure them.

Besides, Dr Web is the only program able to cure large number list of the most complicated polymorphic viruses such as RDA.Fighter, MME.Ssr, Zhengxi, SUPD.Cryptor families and some viruses of the Mad family. Moreover, there are many scanners that can not merely detect these viruses correctly and safely. So, speaking about highly safe polymorphic virus detection, the numerous compliments Virus Bulletin magazine paid to Doctor Web program seem to be deserved.

Virus Bulletin magazine notes that the more complicated is the polymorphic virus an antivirus program comes across, the more time it takes to "disclose" it. In this sense the quality of detection runs naturally counter to the speed scanning. But in case of Doctor Web situation is COMPLETELY different, because DialogueScience, Inc offers a complex technological solution for safe antivirus protection - it is recommended to run Doctor Web scanner in conjunction with ADinf auditor in order to check only new, changed and moved files. It guarantees both HIGH QUALITY and HIGH SPEED of checking:

"The Dr Web scanner is really designed to be used in conjunction with DialogueScience's ADinf integrity checker and, working in this combination, the slow but thorough scanning would not be a major problem."

We congratulate the developers of Doctor Web antivirus program Igor Daniloff and Vsevolod Lutovinov with one more merited success on international level and wish them to keep going on!
