SpIDer Guard for Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000

24 Mar 2000 SpIDer Guard for Windows NT is released.
24 Sep 1999 SpIDer Guard, a memory-resident sentry, is armed with a significantly enhanced ability to control viral activity, namely: a new technology prevents a wide range of known and even unknown memory-resident Windows-viruses from intruding computer memory.
18 Feb 1999 SpIDer Guard implements an intellectual technology for monitoring viral activity, called SpIDer-Netting. This technology can block up the activity of virtually all known (as well as unknown!) viruses.

A new antivirus program, called SpIDer Guard, was released by DialogueScience. SpIDer is a memory-resident activity monitor for Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000. It employs the same techniques as Doctor Web and is included in the DrWeb for Win32 package.

Briefly, SpIDer's profile looks as follows:

  • SpIDer is a memory-resident antivirus program for Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000;
  • SpIDer intercepts any attempt to access files and disk system areas and checks "on-the-fly" if they are infected with a virus;
  • SpIDer employs an absolutely new and unique technology of detecting and blocking viral activity, called SpIDer-Netting.
  • Starting with version 4.13, SpIDer is armoured with a significantly better ability to control viral activity, namely: the new technology enables SpIDer to prevent from loading into computer memory a wide variety of known and even unknown resident Windows-viruses by blocking up the startup of an infected program.
SpIDer Guard uses the same kernel and antivirus database as all antivirus scanners of the DrWeb32 family, which empowers SpIDer with much of Doctor Web's functionality, including the ability:
  • to detect and remove all known viruses (boot, file, macro, HTML, etc.) from files and disks;
  • to scan packed executable files and archives;
  • to detect and disable viruses in computer memory.
Unlike Doctor Web, SpIDer Guard can operate automatically, i.e. without requiring the user to make any special effort to scan his system. SpIDer can monitor such operations as file creation, file write, and program launch. However, monitoring all these operations may slow down the system due to the time-consuming antivirus check. A reasonable compromise between antivirus protection and system performance might be the so-called Smart Mode which reduces the check time by several times, while preserving the protection reliability.

And, of course, SpIDer's highlight falls upon the SpIDer-Netting technology mentioned above. The program also offers a few features that make it easy to use:

  • easy install/uninstall procedure;
  • intuitive interface for configuring the operational mode that can be accessed from the task tray;
  • detailed logging of all operations and cumulative check statistics;
  • automatic check of floppy disks (including auto-check before rebooting to prevent accidental infection by boot viruses);
  • low usage of system resources.
With the advent of SpIDer Guard, DialogueScience anti-virus products have become even friendlier to end users. We are trying to make our programs as easy to use as possible, preserving, at the same time, their quality and reliability. The recent step we've made in this direction is SpIDer Guard that streamlines and automates the protection of Windows systems against viral attacks.
